Epiretinal Membrane - some information

Epiretinal Membranes (ERM) describe thin, almost transparent layer of fibrous cellular material that forms as a ‘film’ over the macula at the back of your eye.

When an epiretinal membrane forms over the macula, it may contract and wrinkle the macula resulting in distorted and/or blurred vision.

OCT scans are helpful in the diagnosis and management of ERM. This high-resolution image can allow evaluation of the macula in cross section and three-dimensionally. Subtle ERMs can be detected.

In many cases this be symptomless, but for some people there will be noticeable changes.

Ongoing home monitoring is recommended using an Amsler Grid. This tool will enable charting any changes in vision.

It is often confused with macular degeneration. Although both conditions do affect the macula (the sharp focusing area of the retina at the back of your eye) they actually have different symptoms and causes.
