What is Behavioural Vision Therapy Assessment?

Behavioural optometry is a specialised field of optometry that delves deeper into the eye-brain connection. Assessment considers visual demands, such as reading, computers, and learning, along with how the visual system has developed in each individual. The way you interpret what you see does not depend solely on clear sight. Interruption to neural development can alter how you use your vision. Our goal is comfortable efficient vision and visual processing.

The first step is a ‘regular’ eye examination to assess vision, eye health, and the fundamentals of focus and eye teaming. Typically it will be at the second visit when more comprehensive testing begins.

Not sure what type of appointment to book?

Don’t worry, we can guide you. But if you haven’t been to us before, booking a normal eye appointment is usually the first step.

What do I need to bring?

It is very helpful to bring any reports (education or health) which give background into the reason for your visit. These may be from teachers, schools, or other health professionals.

What is vision therapy?

Vision therapy is an individual, prescribed treatment plan to improve specific problems. Therapy, also known as visual training, aims to re-teach the visual process. It is a series of activities to help a person observe and learn how to change their visual process.

The key purpose is to help the brain talk to the eyes in the most effective way possible. This involves use of the entire body through speaking, writing, or physical movement. Activities can include balancing, throwing and catching, as well as using lenses or prisms.

Vision therapy is like physical therapy, working the eyes as well as the brain controlling vision. Rather than a simple list of tools and techniques, successful vision therapy is a result of active engagement between the Optometrist and the ‘patient’ and (in the case of children) their parents.
